Average Ring Size for Women & Men

The honest averages, by finger — and why height and weight cannot predict your size, no matter what a viral chart claims.

The averages

WhoAverage ring finger size (US)Typical rangeIn mm (circumference)
Women6 – 75 – 851.9 – 54.4 mm
Men9 – 108 – 1159.5 – 62.1 mm

These ranges match the sizes jewellers sell most. Use them only as a fallback for a surprise — see measuring secretly for better options, and the women's and men's charts for full detail.

By finger

The ring finger is the reference finger. As a rough guide on the same hand: the middle finger is usually about one size larger than the ring finger, the index finger similar to the middle, the pinky about two sizes smaller, and the thumb several sizes larger and hard to size without measuring. Always measure the exact finger the ring is for.

Myth-busting: height, weight and shoe size

There is no reliable formula linking height, weight, BMI or shoe size to ring size. Finger size depends on bone structure, knuckle width and soft tissue — which vary independently. Any site that “calculates” your ring size from your weight is guessing. The only honest shortcuts are measuring (how to measure) or using the on-screen sizer with a ring you own.

Honest note on charts: Ring size charts vary by up to half a size between jewellers. Always confirm your size in millimetres — inner diameter or circumference — with the jeweller you are buying from before you order.

Frequently asked questions

Can ring size be predicted from height or weight?
No reliable formula exists. Two people of the same height and weight routinely differ by two or more ring sizes. Averages are only a fallback for surprise gifts — measuring is always better.
Does ring size change with age?
It can. Knuckles often enlarge with age and fingers change with weight and season, which is why jewellers suggest re-measuring every few years.
